I have a new 84 rabbit convertible that I got a few months ago. It ran like a champ until today on the ride home. Going up a hill I noticed a huge loss in power acompanied by a new noise. King a a cross between a exhaust leak and squeak. Limped home and popped the hood. There is some squeking coming from the belts but the noise appears to be coming from a pipe emerging from under the left side if the intake manifold. It is about a 1/4" in diameter and exhaust gas is spewinfg out of it. I traced it back to the source and it goes to a port in the exhaust manifold beside the o2 sensor. What is this line?I can't find it in my bently manual. The end of the hose is about where an egr valve would be in an egr equiped car according to the pictures. It seems wrong to have exhust gas spewing under the hood. Also could a large exhust leak cause my huge loss in power ( I barely made it up my driveway) or is the power loss connected to something this line was connected to. I cant find any hose that is floating around disconnected. Thanks In advance. I'm new to watercooled VWs and am learning my way around the little car. Shane

sure it's not the test pipe for a sniffer probe? pretty much all VWs of that vintage have them, they just have a little rubber cap on the end. You could either bust it off and plug the hole or else get a new one from the stealer, your choice. Looks like about 3/8" or 1/4" fuel line but I'm sure it's actually a metric size.
You're probably running a tad off now as not all the exhaust gas is hitting the O2 sensor.

Only if it says so on the emissions sticker on the hood. sometimes youll ahve an emissions sticker that says nothing about a cat. in this case..if ti's not required, you dont ahve to have one on there.
