91 fox wiper issues

91 fox...

having wiper difficulties.

sometimes my wipers don't work, or they will stop in mid-operation. if i stop the car, get out, and physically "give them a boost" by hand, they will usually work fine for a while, but stop again within an hour of driving. sometimes, flicking the wiper lever on the steering column to another postion gets them going again.

this problem seems to be quite intermittent, and i haven't noticed any correlation to temperature.

incidentally, the intermittent wiper feature has never worked in this vehicle for as long as i've owned it. the wipers operate at 'low' speed when the lever is at the intermittent setting.

any suggestions would be welcome. thanks much andy

Most often it is a motor failing (worn out) or the linkage needs to be freed up and/or lubed. In other words, there is too much resistance somewhere.

Pull the wiper motor out (you have to remove the wipers, then the wiper linkage and all from under the hood), then remove the plastic cover from the moter. Clean the contacts inside... this should work. The contacts get dirty and cause the motor to appear it's failing. This is also often what causes peoples wipers not to return to the rest position when turned off (often mistakenly diagnosed as a bad wiper relay).
