I have a 1993 VW Passat and it just started shutting off suddenly and you have to try starting it 3 or 4 times before it will start again. Then, when it does start it runs for a few minutes then shuts off. It's gotten so bad now that it won't make it down the driveway. Any ideas on what has gone wrong?

It helps to know more specifics......like which engine and trans in it! ;-)
Could be ign switch, vacuum leak, fuel pumps or relays or ??? I have even seen an oil pump do that. 8^)

It is a VR6 automatic.
Distributor or coil pack?
If your engine has a coil pack it may be the engine speed sensor. I just replaced one on a VR6 but I think the metal on the tip of the old one was causing most of the problem. I did not want to have it stall again so a new one was installed.
If your engine has a distributor, it may be the ign. coil, pickup sensor in dist, wiring or ??? if you are loosing spark.
Now if it is fuel related, then it may be the fuel pump relay or a very common problem of being out of gas! lol
Do you have a repair manual on your vehicle? Good luck! later, dave (One out of many daves)
