'96 Golf shocks/springs

I have a '96 golf 2.0 GTI in need of shocks. I wanted to know if anyone out there has experience on the replacement of springs and shocks for an upgrade in handling with little or no change in ride height? Opinions on keeping original springs? Opinions on the Touring bilsteins? What other parts (bump stops, strut bearings, etc) are recommended as to be replaced when doing this job? TIA Andy

I think I am going to do the adjustable Konis yellow when I change out my 2003 struts. On the old cars you always do bearings and bumpers. I have not done my esearch on my car to discover what the typical policy is. I happen to live in a smooth roads state so my parts may not be as beat up as someone who lives in Ohio. Even so since I have almost 160,000 miles on my car I will replace all the consumables.

There is a nice article at tdiclub.com

that discusses someof your questions. I think the article may have starte at vwvortex.TDI seems to be slightly less myth ridden than the vortex.
