99 Jetta Sunroof

Hi all. I have a '99 Jetta with a pile of annoying problems with non-critical parts of the car. The most frustrating one for me right now is that the stupid visor for the moonroof fell off of it's tracks rendering it useless. The dealership wants $300 to fix it, and I was going to do it next week, but unfortunately the check engine light has come on asn the repair shop says that I need $350 worth of parts and labor to fix that. *Grrrr*

So.. I'm thinking that I really have no intention of selling this car off in the near future as it is paid off and I'm enjoying not having the car payment, so I'm not terribly worried about doing something that my lower the car's resale value. I'm also thinking that the visor is unnecessary. So I'm wondering if anyone knows what would be involved to just remove the visor all together? Will the moonroof function without it? And can it be safely removed without having to rip the roof apart, which is what the dealership says they will need to do to replace the visor and is what makes the procedure cost $300 in the first place.

Thanks for any advice.
