A2 front question

Is there something that should go between the spring and strut mount? I replaced my front mounts on my 91 jetta last year and they blew already :( I'm wondering if I'm missing a part or other. I was wondering if there was a 'spring hat' type part like in the rears.

thanks.

Yes. A plate sits on top of the spring and the strut mount sits on top of that. Send me an email address and I'll send you a picture.

I'm currently running Bilstein TC with H&R oe sports(crappy nyc potholes!) Darryl was nice enough to send me a pdf of the exploded view of the front setup. I have the sealed strut deals in the front so the whole thing has to be replaced. Here's how it f*'ed up in less than a year 1.) the strut mounts were installed upside down i.e. shiney side up :( 2.) The upper strut plate/hats (between spring and mount/bearing) were totally missing on both sides!!! This culminated in the mount blowing and the passenger tower cap stuck out

5". If I open the hood, the shaft along with the remains of the mount sticks straight up! argh! well add that to the ball joint and brake job I'm gonna attempt this weekend....

Never admit this in public :-)

I can see how this lead to your situation. Great link, I wonder if he was missing the spring caps as well.

Is the top of the strut tower still shaped properly?

Do only one side at a time and use the other side as a reference. :-O

well I ordered the springs seats after searching exhaustively for them. germanautoparts and parts4vws didn't carry them so I tried vwparts.com. darryl, are these the right ones??
