Anyone ever replace an a2 starter on an automatic? ANYBODYWOODCHUCKANYBODY?

Do I have to completly remove the drive shaft to get the starter out or canI just remove the bolts holding the (12 point 8 mm) inner shaft to thetranny?

Usually I remove the right side shaft completely for added room. Altho there was one car that I did not have to move the shaft at all. It had room, but I have forgotten which car it was. 8-( I am pretty sure that the heatshield was either missing or I was able to remove it before I was able to get that starter completely out.

In my '92 I couldn't see how removing the half shaft would help.  It's bolts are in a blind area.  If you're not comfortable working like that(I sure wasn't) you should probably take it to somebody who is.  If I remember correctly, the engine subframe was far more in the way than thehalf shaft.  A mechanic that has done this job before w/o taking all thisstuff will do it for a lot cheaper than you'd think.  I found a place todo this job for under 2 hrs labor a few years back.  As soon as you haveto take stuff like the half shaft off you add more time and morethings can go wrong...

I pulled the 6 bolts out from the inner CV joint and it swung out of the wayenough to get the starter out, next time try it this way, you won't have topull the whole axle.
