How difficult is it to remove the lock assemblies from the from the front door handles of a 96 passat? The passenger side exterior handle is broken and I need to replace it, but can I swap the lock assembly from the original handle, or will I need to have different keys for each side?
Much obliged in advance - Chris

I did this a few years back on a friend's B4. Getting the outer handle off is not very difficult. I think you need to pry off the inner door lining to get access, but I am not sure (I did front and rear doors, and I needed to remove door lining on at least one of the doors).

I think one bolt/screw will allow you to remove the door handle. This bolt is visible as soon as you open up the door. On the passenger side it "may" be clockwise to loosen it. I am not sure on this though and your window may need to be either up or down too.
I have found that a pin in the door handle usually backs out causing problems with the unlatching of the door. Do a google search for passat door handle repair and see what you find.
