cam position sensor

Okay, yet another newbie question...

What does the cam position sensor do (please, don't just say "it senses the cam position"), and what would the symptoms be if it were dying?

Context: ABA engine ('95 Cabrio).

It's tells the ECU where Top Dead Center(TDC) is for number one cylinder. Once the ECU knows this it can fire the injectors sequentially for each cylinder. If the cam position sensor signal is missing, or doesn't look correct... then the ECU just fires the injectors every rotation at 50% the rate when everything is working correctly. The result is the engine is a little less peppy.
