Damm A2 doors hard to open

Have you tried putting lube on the hinge pins?

No, it's not that - it's the "trigger" thing. You have to _really_ squeeze it and sometimes even that won't release the catch.

Hinges are not a problem.

Remove the door handle and grease up the mechanism on the inside of it, if you don't it'll eventually break.

Take the handles off, oil them.

your handles are busted. this is a common problem. Replace the handles, and then remove and lube them every year to prevent this from happening again. If the front door handles are original, make a note of the key code in case you ever lose your keys.

I think he's referring to the A2 or MkII VW, or Golf/Jetta from '85 to '91. The Audi A2's are something else.

Yep this was it on my mk2, the lever had snapped inside so with luck you could get the door to open but it was very stiff. New handle on the drivers side and grease on the passenger (newer due to local hoodlums) side kept it sorted.

Ok, here's what I did.

Took off the handles and greased the moving parts.

The area where the handle mechanism bore on the door mechanism was worn. I cut a small piece of sheet aluminium and formed it around the end, so that the bearing surface was larger.

The door handle works just fine now. Longevity may be an issue, but price and simplicity of repair are not.

Chances are, the VW group will know more about Mk. 2 VWs than Audi guys...

Your handles are wearing out and will eventually need to be replaced. Had it happen countless times in my past A2 VWs.

The original message was cross posted to the UK VW forum where the Golf was never known as the A2. The A2 in the UK to us (well except the few hardcore mk1 & mk2 owners) means the Audi A2

hence the confusion
