Help! Eurovan balljoint fiasco

I'm trying to replace the upper ball joint on my 93 Eurovan.

So far I've:

1) Released the torsion bar tension 2) Removed the lower nut and big brass hexagon thingy 3) Whacked the knuckle to separate the joint 4) Removed the retaining clip on top of the joint.

But the threaded shaft won't come free of the lower knuckle. Does the alignment plate need to be removed? Or shall I whack it with the BFH (big freaking hammer)?

Also, the joint won't come loose from the upper knuckle. The replacement joint appears splined and it looks pressed in. Shall I:

A) Use a bigger BFH and fork? B) Something else?

Any help/technique is appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for all of the tips. Let me count them... hmm.. zero.

I've since got it apart. Here is what to do:

1) Release the torsion bar tension 2) Removed the lower nut and big brass hexagon thingy 3) Mark the position of the alignment adjuster. 4) Remove the bolt from the alignment adjuster 5) Removed the retaining clip on top of the joint. 6) Put a big puller around the upper control arm knuckle, being careful not to place the jaws over the ball joint lip under the knuckle 7) Screw in the center puller shaft with all your might 8) Since it still won't budge, while it is still under pressure from the puller, smack it real hard with hammer few times and it will blast loose. (The puller will "push" the ball joint out of the knuckle.) 9) Place the ball joint in a vise and pound the ball joint shaft out of the alignment assembly or use the puller and whack method again.

I still haven't figured out how to press the ball joint into the upper knuckle while it is still in the vehicle, but I'll figure it out myself.

Can't help you much, we never have any to work on with the task you're doing. They just don't come back after the free warranty runs out. But if you have a repair manual the procedure should be outlined.
