Help - Removing 86 golf diesel cylinder head

Sep 10, 2003 2 Replies

Hey everyone, just wondering what the name of the tool that is required to remove the 10 bolts that fasten the cylinder head to the engine body. I thought it might be a Torx but there are many more points on the bolt head than a Torx offers. Is it a(nother) VW special tool? The manuals that I have don't describe the tool specifically.

Any and all info is appreciated..

Go to Sears or another autoparts store and look for them. They usally come in a plastic pouch with three different sizes. They are also used, smaller size, for the inner cv joint bolts. Don't bother trying to ask or call ahead. Many have tried this and eather made a wasted trip or found out later they were just around the corner. They are 12 points and you need a 12mm for your golf's head. You'll also need new head bolts, they are torque to yeild one shot deals and read up on the tightning procedure. Follow it exactly. You'll need a torque wrentch, 1/2" braker bar and water pipe to do the job properly.
