idle surges

I would check the IAC(Idle Air Control aka idle stabilizer) I'm not sure if there in the same place on a 16v but should be top of engine about the diameter of 2 rolls of quaters. It will have a plug connector at one end and ahose at the other with a hose out the bottom connected to the intake somewhere. Disconnect it and clean it with intake cleaner I usually spray a liberal amount into both hose holes and shake it up a bit. Then drain excess cleaner. I usually do this until the cleaner draining out is no longer dirty black color. Ive had luck with this in the past and have avoided paying for a new one approx $400.00 CAN dealer only item.

Is the O2 sensor connected? Perform a tune-up (cap, rotor, air filter, plugs and wires if they're old) and have the engine timing and exhaust gases set.

Check the bentley for the procedure to reset the ECU and reset it.
