Would vasoline be a good lubricant to help install new rubber seals?

No. That is petroleum, and not good for rubber.
Silicone lube is good for lubrication.
Soap solution makes a good temporary lube where you want to pass rubber thru channels during installation, but don't want it to stay readily movable later.
Gas for fuel injection seals. I happen to use AmourAll for some rubber stuff even though ArmourAll/silicone is really not good for rubber. A little won't kill the seal. Soap is safer.

Thanks, guys - appreciated.
