I went in last Friday for my (unscheduled) 15,000 mile oil change in my 2003 Jetta GLS TDI. $75 for an oil change and a replaced break light.
While I was waiting I went out and looked at the new Jettas. I have to admit I don't like the shape of the newer models because they don't look European anymore. I wouldn't trade my car for one.
I was shocked at the prices. What the heck happened? They were $28,000 and $29,000! For a Jetta. I can see it if they were the Passats.
Did the new models go through the roof as far as price goes? Or is this dealer really just nuts?
My impression matches yours. It's like VW took their styling cues from Toyota. And what's with that shiny chrome front fascia? Every time I see it I think "Honda." Don't think that's what they meant to convey though..
It is in line with the directions a lot of European manufacturers are following. VW is looking to get the Golf/Jetta a step up in "class" this because of the total VAG range:
SEAT is the sporting range together with Audi

Skoda is the 'normal' range

VW wants to be more of a luxury brand

The funny thing is that according to a leaked internal research from VAG Skoda has the highest build quality within the VAG range together with Audi. Allso a British research has shown that Skoda is among the best in Europe currently.
The most of the europe goes nuts for various station wagons, minivans and hatchback's. It's not that many of them are used for its intended purpose, but they are trendy. So anyone must have one. Just about the same, as SUV's on your side of the pond :) Sedans sadly are rare minority there.
If you want an european look - buy Golf, Golf+, Touran or Passat station wagon :) In boring silver of course. If you want an european feel, buy TDI or 1.4i :) The majority of gasoline Golf4 (I think 7 out of 10) in europe are powered by 1.4i (75Hp). Think about it when you complain about the lack of acceleration of 1.8T :)
But they are still cheaper as in europe. It was a time, when 1$ was ~1.2euro. At the moment 1$ is ~0.8euro, but the prices for the cars in dollars remained essentially the same, and much lower as in europe. Ok, the jetta's are not built in europe either. But I would think, a lot of components are. And the engineering of course. Some models were actually built in europe (bora/jetta wagon?), and the price in dollars still did not jumped through the roof.
So, if they lost money on mk4, they probably used a chance to make some adjustments with mk5.
Do you mean in Europe, or the US? I can assure you that sedans are not at all rare in the US. In fact, the vast majority of cars (i.e. not SUVs or minivans) sold in the US are sedans. Wagons and hatchbacks, meanwhile, are quite unpopular. For instance, the Jetta strongly outsells the Golf in the US.
Europe of course. "there" was a typo, it should be "here".
I know. But "Numan" complained about the lack of "european" look of the new Jetta :) I just tried to describe what "european look" nowadays is :)
Btw, in my "european" eyes the new Jetta does not look alien at all. It just different from Bora, and complies to the new corporate look of VW. But it is still vastly different from all the hondas, mazdas, nissans and toyotas we see here. Maybe you in the US have some different hondas and toyotas, which look similar to Jetta :)
And you can get it with the 2.0 TFSI engine with 200 bhp and 280nm between 1800 and 5000 rpm. This engine really pulls through the whole rev range (once above 1800 rpm).
And the Octavia is available with the 140 bhp 2.0 TDI engine :)
See, that is what I thought. Next time I am close to one of the other VW dealers here in St. Louis I will check theirs and see what the deal is.
Oh, they also had the Market Adjustment sticker on them. We live in Missoui, why would they have to adjust anything. The first time I ever saw one of these was in Hawaii. I can see that since EVERYTHING has to be shipped over.
Yeah, we do. The Jetta looks a lot like a US-market Toyota Corolla, for instance.
I *wish* we got some of the Japanese cars you guys get. Some of them are very nice, but the Japanese manufacturers will only sell their largest, least sporty models here. :-/
I just got in the mail yesterday a "By Invitation" letter from them saying they are having a big sale this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They are giving "Full MSRP" to trade-ins on cars up to 2002. Meaning you trade in a bug for a bug and get this amount for your car.
I am wondering if they have hiked their prices sky high w/Market Adjustment Stickers on top so that they can then have give-aways, etc. for the sale this weekend. I wonder if the stickers will dissapear come next week. I don't care for this but it would be logical.
Hmmm. Next time I go for maintenance I will go back out and look.
Ever wonder why dealers have a $3000 drive, drag, tow... minimum advertised price for you car. I bet you could drag your kids bike in and get 3K off!!!
It's a hatchback, but it looks like a sedan. A sedan is never very popular here in Europe, mostly associated with old people :) Stationwagons and MPV's are the most popular here in the Netherlands at the moment.
