Oil light??

Oil light came on today. There was an audible beeping noise come on with the blinking oil light. Stayed on for about 15 seconds till I shut her off. Stopped car, got out and check the oil, full. Everything looked ok. Had been driving for about 15 minutes at highway speeds when happened. Not speeding, just doing speed limit.

Then 5 minutes later, it came on again for about 20 seconds, but I never stopped, it just went out on it own. Hasn't occurred since.

Had Oil changed on Friday.

It's a 1997 Golf K2 1.8L 8v engine, 221,000 KMS. Daily driver, all stock.

Any one know what this could be?? I don't have a manual, so I couldn't check there. I also searched the internet, no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

SteveC

Faulty Oil pressure switch (hopefully) get a new switch fitted and get the oil pressure checked just for piece of mind.

Same thing on mine a couple of months ago. I first thought (hoped) it was a blocked sump strainer but it turned out to be the oil pump on its way out. New pump not that costly.

I am glad to hear your turned it off as soon as possible. That is one warning you don't want to ignore. It means your car senses very low oil pressure (not necessarily low oil).

It could be many things, you hope it was a bad sensor. If not, you are risking some serious damage. Even just a few 15 second events can damage an engine big time. I suggest you have it checked.

Among some of the possible problems:

Bad sensor Bad oil pump Very low oil Clogged oil strainer Oil pick up broken or bent Stuck pressure relief valve

I would have the pressure checked with a manual gauge first. If that did not show anything, I would have the oil pan dropped and things inspected there. Then the pressure relief valve checked.

It might be suggested to replace the sensor and check the wiring for it. That would be less expensive than checking out the rest, and might be OK, but for my car, I would have it all checked until I found something or had replaced both the pressure relief valve and sensor. I really don't like to get stuck far from home.

Good Luck

Also check to see that you haven't dented your oil pan. The smallest imaginable dent in my oil pan last summer gave me the low oil pressure warning light and buzzer when the car reached operating temperature ('89 Jetta).

Another possibility is too thin an oil for the engine and weather conditions.

When I had that trouble on a Polo, (oil light coming on occasionally after changing the oil), it was the strainer gauze on the sump pick-up pipe that was almost completely clogged. If yours hasn't been cleaned or replaced, I'd say that's a likely reason. If you've got black deposits on the oil-washed walls in the rocker area, that might be a pointer to the same being on the strainer. It's a bit of a nuisance having to remove the sump, but in our Polo's case, it lead to a wrecked big-end bearing. I'm assuming your car has one of these strainers, but I think they pretty much all do.

You could add a defective oil filter to that list, too.
