I don't know anything about the Vanagon, but I do know that in my 91 Golf, the paint code and all the other codes specific to my car are on a white sticker applied to the top of my fuel pump accessable from the trunk. Maybe that is smiliar in some minor way to your vanagon.

I have a Vanagon '83 in which the paint code (and more) is printet on a white sticker found on the ceiling of left (driver's) footwell, i.e. below the fuse box.
Mine says this:
SORT.NR. 17-4-7564 204 DA FARHG. NR. /CHASSIS NO. wv2zzz25 z DH094148 TYP /TYPE 255 561 MOTORKB. /ENG.CODE DG GETR. KB. /TRANS.CODE DU LACKNR. /PAINT NO. LT6A INNENAUST. /INTERIOR MJ M - AUSST. /OPTIONS APB S19 102 500 616 619 766 912 954
i.e. paint code LT6A
