So how does one replace the radio antenna on an 87 jetta, btw it's on the front fender and I see no means of getting to the nut on the back short of pulling the fender. TIA

How about pulling the inner fender.
You must pull the fender liner (made of plastic). Removal of the wheel also helps out greatly. From there it is real easy! Good luck.
