did everyone die?
let's not forget what "Wagen" means in German - "Wagon". That's what we get - a stylistically superior "wagon" not too uncommon from its predecessor the horse drawn carriage :) I have '01 1.8T Jetta and experience the same problem - haven't taken it to the dealer yet since running the engine for half a minute to warm up solves the problem in cold mornings...or I just test my luck on the street, it stutters a little bit but after one or two traffic lights it is ok.
I have the exact same problem, and the exact same car :). I just hope it doesn't continue to worsen as the car ages. I'm sure it will, tho.
My daughter's 2003 1.8T Jetta Tip also has a cold start problem. VW replaced the plugs at the 10000 mile service but that didn't help. The dealership aims to please, but they are new to VW and I don't think their two mechanics have much experience.
So I briefly checked the 1.8T forum on vwvortex.com for cold start problems and the four big (apparent) causes/fixes were: throttle body alignment needed to be done when the engine was really cold, replace coolant temperature sensor, replace MAF sensor, and reflash ECM.
I would recomnmend that you check the 1.8T forum (search archives) for yourself and see what you can find.
