My 2001 GTI suddenly dropped the window pane out of the lifting assembly**It's extremely common behavior. They've finally issued a recall for it. VW used plastic window regulators which break fairly often, apparently. Make an appointment with your dealer, they'll know what's wrong. I took my Jetta in last week for an oil change and there were at least 3 Golfs sitting on the lot with plastic dropcloths (or garbage bags) taped to either the driver's or passenger's side window.

Cool, thanks for the reassurance, all...
In the US, pre-2003 a4 cars have a 7 year extended warranty for front power window regulator clip failure. This is a common problem for cars that have the pre-2003 plastic clips (replacements will be with the metal ones used in 2003).
