VAG-COM trick - good idea?

Hi all,

I recently purchased a VAG-COM kit, in part on the basis of the following:

which indicates that it is possible to reconfigure the Tip computer in a B5 or B5.5 to cure some of the annoyances of the auto tranny's behavior, without having to take the plunge for a computer upgrade. So I'm curious:

- Has anyone here used VAG-COM to reconfigure their Tip computer in this fashion?

- Did it work/not work? Anything explode? Worth the bother?

- If I do decide to go the Tip-chip route, where would you recommend having it done? A friend of mine recommended

any other places I should consider?

It's an '03 Passat GLX FWD Tip, by the way.

Thanks,

Just a follow-up for anyone who might've been interested - my HEX-COM arrived Friday, so this weekend I loaded up VAG-COM on my notebook and dragged it outside, and tried the mod referenced above. It worked, but it's subtle, not night and day. I think it holds gears slightly longer, downshifts slightly more willingly, and is definitely smoother when either pulling away from or pulling up to a stoplight. Of course it's not as big an improvement as one would expect from a Tip-chip, but it was worth it, considering I'll also be able to use it to pull fault codes and such.
