VW Golf Driver autochoke blues

VW Golf Driver ,on a G plate,1595cc..I`m getting a fair bit of grief from this carby when its cold;its the dreaded Pierburg/Solex 2E2 carb.It only plays up when its fairly cold,so all summer its been fine no problems;now its getting colder, the troubles start,It seems to be 2 problems,(not sure if they are connected or not),first problem ,which has always been on this car since I`ve had it,is in cold weather,it always starts fine..but after about 5 miles,at exactly the same point on the road I regularly use,the car starts like missing, and losing power..I change down to 4th,3rd..it gradually gets worse. If I stop the car,and then restart it,,it`s ok;so I dont know if thats the autochoke sticking. The second part of the problem also only happens when pretty cold, the engine seems to almost over rev for about the first 10 miles, and when you change gear..its still revving when you let your foot of the gas,(this cant be doing the clutch any good!)This over revving thing has only started in the last few months,so I dont know if the 2 problems are connected or not.Any ideas?Could these problems maybe be solved by replacing the choke unit with a new one?A mechanic suggested replacing the autochoke with a manual one..but that sounds pricy..Any advice greatly appreciated, WIT
