1997 LHS Automatic Transmission sluggish

Backed out into the street this AM...Put the car in D, but it didn't engage. Tried R and it wouldn't engage. After what seemed like about a minute, it engaged and all gears seemed to work. Weather in the upper 20's-low 30's.

Was there an issue with Chrysler automatic transmissions a few years ago?

I will check the fluid level this evening when I get back ot the car and top it off if necessary.

Any advice is welcomed...

Fluid and filter change with the correct Chrysler Mopar ATF+4, ASAP.

Is the filter change difficult?

Not particularly difficult if you have the tools. The trans pan must be dropped to drain the fluid (there is no drain plug) and get to the filter. The hardest part about this job is that it is messy. You also need to remove the old RTV sealant used at the factory and re-seal. I strongly recommend the Chrysler metal/silicone gasket available at the dealer. It is a bit pricey, but can be re-used.

Regarding the filter and fluid change, this is something that should be done as preventive maintenance. I do mine on three Chrysler vehicles every 30K miles. The good news is there is nothing restricting access so the pan is easy to get at and remove (no cross members, etc.)

Good luck. Post your results. If the fluid and filter change does not help, then you will need to get this serviced at a competent trans service center. make sure they know about Chrysler transmissions and use genuine ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluid. Anything else and you will have major problems.
