is tht a throwout bearing or the clutch

With spring starting to get here, I'm driving with he window open more.

And I am hearing a sound when I start to move that concerns me. Specifically, I'm hearing what sounds like "a big leaf in a squirrel cage" kind of rattle/rustle/sound as I engaged the clutch from a stop. Reverse, first, doesn't make a lot of difference.

Any hints on guessing what might be going on? Starting to fail? How much this is going to cost for parts? What is the life expectancy of a clutch?

I know, not much to go on, but - Mazda ranger with a manual transmission and 207,000 miles.

Engine running at idle, depress the clutch. If there is noise, it is most likely the throw out bearing.

The throw out bearing is not in play UNLESS you are depressing the clutch pedal. The bearing will make noise whether the car (truck) is moving or not, but when not moving, there are no other noises to factor in.

If there is noise when the truck starts to move, but not when it is stationary, then the throw out bearing is not the likely problem.

Oh ... darn. Not what I wanted to hear. ("Needed", maybe, but not "wanted".)

"Maybe it will go away by itself." (I've seen photos of a similar "Maybe it will go away" - brake rotor completely gone. Just the rim and the central part. All the rest was gone.)

Your best bet is to replace the throwout bearing. Here is a little story. I was making deliveries for a company with an Isuzu Pickup. The manual trans was making noise, I told the boss the throwout bearing was bad. Well he had another employee test drive it. They said the bearing was not bad. After 4 weeks the throwout bearing went out completely while I was making deliveries. Rather than wait and spend the extra money, I drove without the clutch back to the shop. They pulled the trans and there was nothing left of the bearing, and the main shaft of the trans was bent. So, instead of just the bearing, the trans was replaced. I would replace the bearing before it gets worse. It is not a difficult job...

I like that "Is not a difficult job" - whcih it would not be if I knew what I was doing, had the tools, and blah, blah, blah.... (whine, whine, goat cheese and whine). But I'll check with my more knowledgeable friends and see what we can do.

thanks.
