Is it my Throwout Bearing??

My understanding is the throw-out bearing would only make noise when the clutch pedal is depressed, that is when the throw-out bearing does its job. If I am wrong I will be corrected.

If the return spring is gone, the bearing can make some noise because there is nothing to force it to fully retract upon releasing the clutch pedal.

I ran like that for a while before I realized my spring had snapped in half, tapping the pedal lightly was sometimes enough to send it making a hollow metal-on-metal noise.

I am not suggesting this is this fellow's problem. Just that the bearing can indeed make noise if the right pieces are broken.

Any other Ideas as to what might make this noise.. I hope it isn't the gears themselves.. Could it be the clutch?

My '67 bus sometimes makes the same noise at an idle with the transmission in neutral and the clutch engaged. I notice that if I speed the engine up, the noise usually goes away. I think it is the bearing that supports the imput shaft of the transmission. As soon as I touch the clutch pedal, the noise goes away. I have thought about if Slick 50 makes a 90w additive I would try it. - Bob

The bearing is an interesting thought. My car does the same thing, more idle less noise.. Also, I discovered today that the sound only occurs when the car is on an incline. I started it after work today where it had been sitting on level ground and no rumble/grind, when I got home, and drove it into the driveway, which is inclined, it made the sound.. Although not nearly as pronounced as after it has been sitting all night. Could it be the Gear oil level as well? I just put 2.5+ quarts in it, and the level seemed good...
