Directional tires-- What about a spare?

Well, I've narrowed my tire choice down to the directional Goodyear's MT/Rs (33x12.50x15), and am wanting to buy a set of four plus the spare. So... what about the spare... do I buy the 5th MT/R and hope I am lucky enough to have it mounted in the right direction when I need it, or do I buy a non-directional tire for the spare (such as a BFG MT or some all-terrain-type tire? I'm assuming if I run a directional tire the wrong direction, bad, bad stuff will happen??

TIA, Trent '99 Sport

Are the MTR's directional?

If so, get a generic spare.

I don't believe in 5 tire rotations, I go front to back only and putting the spare in according to my owners manual only gives me a three tire rotation on the passenger side and the same front to back on the drivers side.

I saved a still good 31x10.5 BFG AT to use as my spare for my BFG 33x9.5 muds. I have open diffs.

I don't know if directional are new but they aren't listed on the Goodyear website and my MT/R's don't have any arrows on them. The closest thing that might look like an arrow is the Durawall Puncture Resistance logo, but you'd have to squint.

My Celica All-Trac has directional tires, and the spare is one-way, by the arrows on the sidewall. The question of mis-direction was posed on some Toyota group or board I read (sorry, don't remember which!) and the consensus was that it didn't matter in the short run--handlng might be squirmy, but would get you home!

there are no arrows pointing "forward" on the mtr. between every 4th lug there is an arrow pointing towards the tread. if the tire is in a position where the arrows are horizontal, while one arrow may appear to be pointing forward, if you look on the opposite side of the tire youll see another arrow (on the same tire) that looks like its pointing backwards. i just went out with a flashlight to make sure. the mtr is not directional.

now, what do these arrows signify? who knows.....but theyre pointing towards the lug and not in any particular rotational direction.

Hmm--perhaps I should have said directional TREAD PATTERN!

Well...

A friend just came over with a Safari van with a nasty shake that just started.

We found a bunch of worn front end parts and changed them.

The shake was still there!

I then took it for a drive and felt the steering wheel wobble at slow speeds. Bingo, hey, you have a broken tire, I say. He says, Oh, they are two months old and used with a 3 month warranty.

We jack up the tiers and spin them and sure as shit, one has a blown cord with a new 8" long bubble on it. (no odd tread wear, therefore a new bubble)

It was a good thing, he had a ball joint and drag link about to fall off, we fixed it.

Used tires in my book are a 50/50 crap shoot if the belts break or not from reverse rotation, see my other post.

I doubt tire manufacturers would recommend cross rotating tires if it was known to cause broken belts.
