True, but it's nice to have some kind of 'target' to gauge to condition. I'm guessing that it's well knackered 3 bearing, miles away from me. No one ever has a fully rebuilt 5 bearing, thats free to a good home - and is next door to me...... Jon

So how do you tell if it's 3 or 5 bearing?????? Location is the South coast, but as I stated before I will arrange delivery (stick it on a pallet and phone a cheap local courier). Condition wise, its OK, past an emissions MOT test in June.

age, and if it's in good nick and you don't intend tuning the balls off it, the 3-bearing is pretty much as good. for reference, a very tidy 3-bearing

2286 I once had had hot idle oil pressure of 20 psi, hot running pressure of about 50-60. which doesn't help unless you have an oil pressure gauge... can;t be that shagged if it passed emissions, though.

aha! the (proper, old) Haynes book has the following:

red painted block, engine number sequences:

36100001A, 99100001A - 8:1 comp. 36400001A, 99200001A - 7:1 comp.

HTH.
