LT85 build date?

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out the build date of an LT85 (santana) gearbox, or even to find out the serial number of the gearbox that was originally fitted to my LR?

Thanks!

They know some about the different types. They may have an idea of the date from the type. It seems an odd request, the condition and type of Santana usually is of far more concern than the serial number or date. Or has someone knicked yours and you have to prove the one found in the lock-up came from your vehicle ?

Hi Steve,

Good idea, I'll give legs a call. The reason (which I should have said in the original post) is that I bought a 1986 110 about 5 years ago which was then owned by an old lady who had it from new. It had only

30k miles on the clock which I know was genuine due to the overall condition and old MOT certs etc. The gearbox became louder and louder since then and during the last week or 2 I have put in a recon LT85, and certain things that I found when I took the LR apart has led me to suspect / wonder if it was the original box that was in there when I bought it. There were many marks / dents etc on the transm. tunnel that makes it look like it has been out before, which it should not have been on a 30k milage LR.

So the very suspicious part of me wonders if some underhand garage swapped the original gbox for a much older one during a service or something, hence I was trying to find out if I could get the history of the box I took out. I am not really bothered, and can't do anything about it, I'm just interested, and it would also explain the sate of the box after only 40k miles to date.

Cheers, Andrew

You've only just got suspicious even though they used the oldest used car sales pitch in the book?, let me guess, she only used it to go to church 8-).

Well yes, there is that! :-)

I bought it from her son who was selling after her death. But I have seen all the paperwork (and still got some of it) including original invoice when it was new etc etc.... and yes she only used it to go to the village in darkest perthshire. It also needed a new cam, but the body work and interior was spotless and unmarked (not so anymore!), the chassis has only the lightest of surface rust, it spent all its life in a dry warm garage.

Well, don't throw the old box away, the only thing that seems to go wrong with them is the front layshaft bearing gets noisy, you'll probably find that's all it will cost in parts, about a tenner and not much of a job to fit.

Got bearing noise in 5th only on mine. Is it likely to be this front layshaft bearing and is it really that easy to replace?

Not hard, just a bit fiddly IIRC but it's a long time since I've been inside one of those. Layshaft bearings should be quite noisy in all except 4th which is usually the front only as the rear is quite a substantial double row bearing so I think you may have to go in and check the rear of both shafts etc. for something else.
