97 Escort Fan Switch Wiring

Anyone know where the white/black strip & the brown wire goes from the fan switch? The haynes BOL shows that the fan switch connects to the fan directly & the other side is a feed, this isn't the case. I suspect that at least one wire connects to the ECU.

Sorry, posted before adding more info. The problem with the car is it struggles to start & won't idle. In comparision with my mates car, the brown wire was grounded, mine wasn't. Grounding this wire cures the problem & the car runs fine. I suspect the fan swich input was constantly on, confusing the ECU. I daren't connect the connecter back to the fan switch though, as if the fan switch comes on, I don't know if shorting the other wire (white/black) would damage the ECU. I think I'll leave the brown wire connected to earth & manually wire the fan through a 30A relay. Any thoughts.

From what I remember, the fan switch is not connected to the ECU. The only thing it connects to is the fan, and switches it directly.

A brown wire on a ford would indicate an earth wire, so there's every possibility you've got an earthing problem, which is affecting other sensors.
