Flasher relays 3&4 pin?

My indicators have been a little erratic this week, so the usual suspect is the flasher relay. Anyway, bought a new one today, but upon taking the old one out, it had

4 pins, whereas the new one had 3.

On testing the new one, it worked fine.

Thinking about it later, there is a towbar fitted, but never used, are the 4 pin ones used for when a trailer is attached?

Yes. The extra pin operates the trailer indicator warning. It is triggered by the extra current passing through the unit. In many cases, the trailer warning light will flash once when the indicators are turned on when no trailer is attached, this is due to the bulbs passing a bit more current when cold.
