Mk6 Fiesta steering wheel

I have a Fiesta TDCI LX and have bought a secondhand leather steering wheel off a Zetec to replace the original on which the coating is peeling off. I've removed plenty of steering wheels in the past but never one like this with an airbag, and I can't see any obvious way to remove the horn fascia/cover to get at the nut.

Could someone give me some advice please?

Whatever you do, disconnect the battery first!

Dave D ( snipped-for-privacy@dave-d.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Disconnect the battery - then wander off and have a cuppa for half an hour or so. Having an airbag launch itself at you can spoil your entire day.

There's probably some screws/bolts/torx go into the bag/wheel centre from behind, through the spokes. Feel around the back of them to try to find a hole.

And then wait for 30 minutes to let any charges dissipate.

Far better still - get a manual.

Firstly do what the others have suggested- disconnect battery and wait

30mins at least.

The two securing screws are on the back of the steering wheel behind the spokes and you will need to turn the wheel 90degs in each direction from dead ahead to reach them.

Having removed quite a few airbags in my time and not wanting to mess about with radio codes I can tell you all that the 'disconnect the battery and wait half an hour' is total bollocks. If you need to remove an airbag then just make sure the steering wheel is centered then turn off the ignition and undo the two T30 screws that hold the airbag, lift the unit off the wheel and (carefully) pull the plug off the back !! (carefully because the plugs tend to be fragile not because the airbag will deploy because it will not!)

There's a junction with a major road 200 yards from my house. 99% of the time nothing is on the major road. So I could simply emerge from the junction without slowing down or looking - 99% of the time.....

radar- thanks for the advice, I'll have a look and see if I can get it off this weekend. I was wary about disconnecting the battery as the car is secondhand and the previous owner didn't write the radio code in the handbook!

Thanks to everyone in the thread for your advice- I will certainly take care removing it, and if I the ABS fuse is labelled I'll pull it before starting work.

The air bag fuse should be number 14, third from left on top row, red in colour with a 10 amp rating.
