The pump's located in the tank. You can get to it by lifting the back seats and removing the plastic covers.

If you can smell petrol then it sounds like the pumps running. Check the fuel filter and fuel lines for splits, cracks or disconnections.

marvelmouse has brought this to us :

I don't know if this helps, but on many cars as you turn the ignition on, you can hear a short burst of activity from the pump. Could you track it down from the noise?

Smell of petrol would seem to indicate that the fuel is getting through, but not being ignited. Pull a plug cap off, fit a plug in the plug cap, place the plug body touching the engine and watch for a spark at the gap in the plug as the engine is cranked.

If you can smell fuel, then the pump is almost certainly working.

Check the rotor arm is turning when you crank the engine, common failure on those is the plastic drive thingy (that connects the dissy to the crank) shearing off.

That'll be the timing belt, then ;-)

I believe the pump on these hangs outside of the petrol tank and very often the pipes will perish spraying clouds of petrol everywhere. For the above he means the dizzy to the camshaft.
