Question ---- Manual Trans Problem on 2003

I have a 2003 base pontiac vibe 5-speed, with the 1.8L. I use mobil 1 5w 30 full synthetic, i decided to change the manual trans fluid. After some research online, i decided to go with Red Line 75w90NS synthetic gear oil. This car is driven extremely gently, but when i am at 15mph, engage clutch into first, while clutch is completely engaged something grinds loudly, downshifting into first is the only time it grinds. Once the gear is engaged no more grinding..... So meanwhile i have switched to mobil 1 synthetic

75w90... still having the problem.. have about 11k miles, any thoughts on what the problem could be is appreciated.. Also, changing the trans fluid yourself dosent void the warranty does it? Is this something that is not covered by the initial 36k warr? thanks for your time.

After talking to the dealer, they said probably syncros in the trans, or the clutch... did the redline 75w90NS damage the syncros?

What does your owners manual specify for trans oil? Most newer manual trans now-a-days use lightweight oil like 5W30 or autotrans fluid. I am also wondering why you changed it in the first place? Do you have several hundred thousand miles on your new car? :)

Changing the oil should not affect warranty. What you used is good stuff. Keep the receipts for it. I agree with the dealer: synchros or clutch. ... clutch... Better have it checked out soon. And don't mess with the oil again until your car reaches 500,000 miles. Paul

Not to start a flame, but, IMHO, downshifting to first gear while rolling at 15 MPH will ruin any trans' first gear syncros. IOW you broke it. First gear should only be used after stopping, or rolling at 2-3 mph in a parking lot. You could be in 3d at 15mph.

It's a car, not a motorcycle. Downshifting is WRONG. GW
