Mounting/balancing 17 / 16 inch wheels cost

I have to replace tires on my 9-5 2000 Garry Fisher, so I am browsing thru the list of local mechanics in order to get a decent price for 4 tires mounting/balancing. I have one shop close to my home with a very good reference from the saabnet.com users. The only one question bothers me a lot:

-- I been told by the mechanic that mounting/balancing 17 inch wheels requires MUCH more work than mounting/balancing 16 inch wheels. Does this statement true?

Please advice.

If that is the case, I would love to know it, too. How come labour could be any different? Assuming wheels are more or less similar (not 16" steel wheel vs. 17" magnesium light alloy)

Not really. They are more sensitive to imbalance, but the work to balance them is the same.

I would recommend

They will mount the tires on the wheels and balance them correctly with a Hunter GSP 9000 machine for free. All you need to do is take them out of the packing and put them on your car. The free work easily offsets the cost of shipping.

All the shops in my area now charge extra for 17" wheels, some for

16"wheels.

Tirerack is great and I love 'em, but the last "balanced" set I got left much to be desired. They were totally unbalanced. It might have been a fluke, but I had stuff like weights falling off upon delivery, etc.

To their credit, they paid all costs without hesitation to have a local dealer rebalance them. They were also incredibly helpful and flexible on one order that had problems with untrue wheels. So, I highly recommend them, I recommend the GSP9000 whether they use it or you find one locally... but you still might end up at the tire shop.

Thanks for answering my question! I went to the nearby mechanic who said that the work (and cost) should be the same. This guy was also referenced by tirerac.com
