90 Camry Halfshaft Removal

I have a 1990 Camry, four cylinder, automatic, made in the US. I need to replace the left half shaft. It is the slide out type, not a bolt on. I disconnected everything, but cannot slide the inner splined shaft out of the transaxle. Autozone repair manual website (page 2 of 12 step 8.3 says to "use the proper tools". What are the proper tools? I tried to just pull it out but it only moves about 1.5 inches and does not release from the transaxle. I know there is an internal snap ring that is probably holding it. Questions are:

  1. What are the proper tools? Are they needed or can I just pull on it? If so, how hard do I pull?
  2. The new remanufactured halfshaft comes with new snap ring. Can I use this new one or should I get a new snap ring from the dealer?
  3. My previous experience with remanufactured halfshafts on a '84 Jetta was unpleasant. The reman'd joints failed within 10 months and I needed to replace the outer CV joint. Are there different qualities in remanufactured parts or is it a game of chance? I have not been able to find this part new. Thanks to all for your help.

For the later models most are snap-on type with a retainer ring. Haynes manual says "Pry Bar" is the special tool you mentioned. Be careful not to damage the rubber oil seal, it says.

The picture shows the retainer ring should come out with the half shaft. On the other hand, the passenger side you need to remove some snap rings and a bolt I believe for the support bearing.

For rebuilds I'd use only Toyota or NAPA. Toyota probably got their builds from NAPA anyways. ;)
