Which model and what year? On the "Old Style" heater controls, 80's to mid

90's, you remove the bezel surrounding the radio/heater, undo four screws for the heater control and replace it with a #75 bulb, also called 'wheat grain'. They can be hard to find! And, carefully remove the green 'prophylactic', since they are even HARDER to find, and then you'll be buying the whole thing from Toyota for around $12.

A word of warning: Some of these are replacable merely by pulling the bulb out and inserting a new one. Some of them are a 'fused' assembly, meaning the bulb and holder are a unit, with the leads to the bulb soldered or 'welded' to the contacts. These are harder to replace. If you have the guts, then yank the bulb out; it will sound like it's breaking but that's the leads being torn off. On the new bulb, move the contacts from the flange on the bulb to the sides of the bulb, and then carefully push the bulb in so it makes contact with the contacts in the holder. Before you put the whole thing back together, test it! If you didn't get the wires lined up properly, you'll have to try again.

I have done this with dash (instrument panel) bulbs with great success. It's not hard!

Good Luck.

Is this what we're dealing with?

It's kind of hard to tell if this is electronically controlled or cable controlled. But, the disassembly should be similar to what I had described earlier; you can see the screw holes on the side. It should loosen up enough to give you access to the bulb...unlike my Mazda! (GRRRR!)

Yes, some things are simply BETTER on Toyotas! ;)

that looks like it, but i can't seem to figure how the trim piece comes off that hides the screws. any pointers on that?? the radio is above the heater control and it's one trim piece that goes around it.

==================== Here's my solution - up to you to take it or leave it, but it's free, easy, and has worked just fine for several years now. You just learn the switch positions by touch so you don't have to look at them. Keeps your eyes available for driving also. Positions are actually intuitive, face, face and feet, feet, feet and windshiedl, windshield only, -- and the knobs are of different sizes so you can indentify them by touch.

many thanks....it was tough getting the bezel off. the clips were TIGHT.

to get to the bulbs, the inside/outside slide tip needs to be removed and the dials need to be removed. there are 2 small screws to remove under the one on the left and right. on top of the face plate is 2 small clips that release the face plate and expose the bulbs which pull right out. they are clear bulbs w/ a green rubber over them to give the green effect. the number on the bulb is EWG 203. i called Advance Auto int he area and they told me they have those in stock so hopefully it'll be fixed today!!

again thanks for the help!!!!!

FYI #74 bulbs sold at the auto parts store fit but were a different shape, so the green rubber cover didn't fit but i'll keep looking for exact replacements. at least there's light now.

again many thanks!!!!
