Speed Sensor Issues

My 1991 Toyota 4x4 Pickup with a 22RE engine with 5 speed manual tranny has been running roughly at idle. A mechanic friend of mine ran a test that showed a code for the for the speed sensor. Could the speed sensor be causing the rough idle? Also, there is a lack of power on incline. Last winter in a headwind I had the gas floored in fourth gear just to keep up speed on the freeway. The engine is tight, uses no oil and has good compression in each cylinder. I'd really like to know about the consequences of a bad speed sensor. Thanks in advance for any helpful info.

PS. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all new and new cat converter is installed. Ran rough before and after these improvements. Thanks again!

I have something similar going on with my 93 2wd pickup with 181,000 miles. Idle speed went down and idle got rough. Power seems to waver just a little while driving. I've adjusted valves, checked the vacuum and compression, replaced cap, rotor, wires, plugs, airfilter. Burns no oil.

How do you get the computer error code?

My 4runner did that with a bad TPS.

RE: How did we get the codes:

My buddy took a wire and jumped two of the ports in the diagnostic module that is located next to the fuse and switch box in the engine department. I have no idea which ones he jumped. He then was able to read off of the instrument panel (down by the idiot lights) the code.
