2.0 L aircooled engine into 1894 water boxer- fuel inj. barely runs

The fuel injection on my 1984 water boxer (1.9L) has completely crapped out, I have done piles of diagnostic stuff and it still refuses to run...

Here is the question:

Can I put a 2.O liter pancake engine into my vanagon...after all the the 1980 to 1983 vanagons have the pacake aircooled motor in them, and I can at least work on them pretty well.

One would assume that the motor mounts are the same??? Maybe not???

...................If you carefully follow the troubleshooting guide in the Bentley manual, there's a very good chance that you can figure out what's wrong. Pull an injector and see if it pulses with a a good spray while you're cranking the engine. Be sure that the spray is strong enough that there isn't any sputtering, dribbling, etc. If you've got spark to the plugs and proper timing, it 'should' run. Poor electrical connections happen a lot, especially in a damp environment. The Digijet and Digifant waterboxers are especially susceptible to moisture related electrical problems in the engine bay because there's no cooling fan to ventilate the compartment. If all of the sensors and their leads check out per the Bentley troubleshooting guide, there's not much else to go wrong on them.

.................You would need the rear crossmember from an aircooled vanagon. It would be a tremendous amount of work to match up the wiring in an '84 vanagon to the EFI on a 2.0. Take a look at the schematics in the Bentley manual. Switching to carburetors might work but I've heard others say that it's also a PIA.
