67 Bus Wheel Bearings - 6 Part Question

Question ... A month or so ago I noticed gear oil leaking from the drivers side rear axel. Took it to the "grease monkey" across the street from my office - along with a new seal. He replaced the seal, the leak stopped and yesterday I heard a noise. Not actually a noise, but the bus tire/wheel sounded different on the drivers side rear .. When I stopped I noticed leakage again. Took it back to the "Grease Monkey" and he said I needed to replace the bearing and seal .. that the bearing being bad, made the seal go bad ..

So my questions are: Does this sound right ?? If the bearing was bad would I have noticed anything other than what I mentioned above ?? Is this something I need to RUSH to fix ?? Can a "Grease Monkey" do the job ?? Or should I take it to a REAL mechanic ?? What should I expect to pay ??

Thanks, Diane

...if he reads thenet, and catches ya referring to him as a grease monkey and not a real mechanic....expect to pay 2-3 times as much as if ya hadn't belittled him and his skills. =-)))))

On a '67 Bus, rear wheel bearings involve a very complicated assembly of the reduction gears and multiple bearings. You absolutely need a mechanic who has been thru this one before. Expect it to be pricey...

haha ... Well .. He IS a mechanic .... sort of .. but the place is an oil and lube place, he said he has never replaced the bearing or bearings on a VW before. If he does read my post, I will be SHOCKED but when it comes to simple repairs .. tune ups [although he said he does NOT know how to adjust the valves.... ahem ....] I can always count on them to do the job .. and make room for me whenever I stroll in .. always past noon .. ::: whatever :::

I have done this a couple times on both a '66 Bus (RIP), and my current '67 westfalia. You almost have to rebuild the reduction boxes to get this all to work right.

Both times I ended up rebuilding the redux boxes from the axles out, and was really happy in both cases, with over 30,000 miles on my current driver, the '67 Westy. :)

Another person tells me that it is very possible that there is NOT a bad bearing .. he said the sound I hear would be VERY noticeable if it was a bad bearing ..
