can axle tubes be too tight?

i bought a rebuilt trans off a guy who decided to go to a beefer trans for his engine(this one is a stock swing axle) the trans has been sitting for a couple of years when we went to move it the swing axle arms were stiff and stuck in place i added gear oil and one i started to move them they moved quite freely,a little stiff but not too bad. i have since installed the trans and now when going around a corner or a speed bumb i hear a clunk i guess is the best way to describe it,the trans shifts smooth and great but i am wondering if the axle tubes can be put on so tight that they bind?when you install them does a lubercant go on first? i did not install them and wondering if mabey he did something wrong when he put them on. lastley can axle and axle tubes be removed without removing the transmission? thanks for any help russ

Sounds just right, when there's oil in the parts that are in contact with each other at the pivoting point, under the sidecover. No noticeable play, shouldn't *quite* move freely, more like through molasses. But no binding. TRanny sitting on ground or on a bench, if you lift one axle up and allow it to rop down, it will drop down without asking directions first. :)

When installing, coat the white, plastic "flower petals" and corresponding surfaces with tranny oil lightly.

Who knows.

I've a feeling it would be easier if the tranny was out.
