I probably know the answer to this already, but just in case...



I stumbled on an Ebay ad today that describes a piggyback chip that can add



15+ HP. They mention that this chip fools the engine to thinking that the intake air temperature is cooler than it actually is... Hmmm... And its less than $10..... Hmmm...

It might cause the computer to dump more fuel in and run richer, but that won't necessarily result in greater horsepower. Of course then there are all the downsides of running rich all the time.

Well, it's a yes and no kind of answer. The computer will add more fuel when it's cooler. Why? Not really sure, it just does. So if you make the computer think the IAT is lower than it really is, it will add more fuel. Does this make more power? Sure it does. But it's not efficient power. And of course fuel mileage will be worse, since you're running rich all the time. Where is your IAT sensor now? If it's in the manifold, you could move it to the intake tube for the same results. And that would be free. It's easy to change back if you don't like it. Take a close look at what this "kit" is that's offered on e-bay. What you get is a resister that you solder into the sensor line. You could get the same thing at radio shack for

First, look at his feedback, then check the feedback of some of his customers. In particular checkout nsyncsux33 Next take note that he has recently changed his username and that his feedback is a little ... odd. I would say, posted by buddies in some cases.

Next, if Brent tells you it's junk.. then it prolly is.

My goodness... People will try to sell anything on eBay... The sad thing is people will _buy_ anything on eBay. Go to Radio Shack and get the resistor yourself they are only like $.50 - $.75 for a 4 pack, or is that a 6 or 8 pack? Anyway, they are really cheap.

You can tell from the picture where to put it, so that's half teh battle right there. Then you can probably read the bands off the resistor to tell the resistance if you use a magnifier on your computer (like the one that comes with windows). There you have it. It's as simple as that and you'll be fouling plugs, getting worse mileage and burning up your catalytic converters in no time from an overly rich mixture. Well, I am sure it's a fine quality resistor. :) They cost pennies in bulk, and even blister packed at radio shack shouldn't be more than $2 with a few extra ones to boot.

The thing I don't like about it is that it is tricking the computer into thinking there is a denser (cooler) air charge than there is. While it may lead to more horsepower initially I have to wonder what the long term damage may be. Carbon build up, toasted catalyst, misfires, just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Unless someone has the design docs for the 4.6L's computer and can show what the computer uses the sensor for and what an incorrect reading will cause, it's just an over priced risk. IMO.

Cool air is more dense than warm air. Having more air packed into the cylinder is a good thing for horsepower. The little chip (resister as other has said) can't change the laws of physics. John

The results of tweaking the air temperature are insignificant and most likely negative. It makes sense that Ford has a richer mixture than optimum just to insure that NO engine runs too lean (dont want pinging and melted pistons). Fooling the computer into thinking the air is denser will just add more fuel and produce LESS power. If you want to maximize power, you need to advance the inital timing and run as LEAN as you can WITHOUT raising the EGT excessively or having any signs of pinging (plus a reasonable safety factor).

Very true. But, by adding this resister are you changing the quality of the air entering the engine? I don't think so. The computer thinks you are, but it isn't really happening.

What's the color coding on that resistor? Or what is the Ohm rating? I could go get one at Radio Shack and test it on my car just to see if the power is really there and go put my feedback on his eBay item with the info on the resistor. LOL I wonder how many would put a bid of 4+ bucks when they hear what they are getting?

I don't know what effect the resistor has on fuel, but it does keep the computer from retarding timing that normally happens at higher temperatures.
