1997 Suburban C1500 -2WD - Transmission

I have the above with the 5.7L engine and whatever transmission it comes with.

This afternoon I noticed a rough shift from 1st to 2nd. Later I noticed that I no longer have reverse gear. I also noticed some light oil sprayed near the power steering pump but I am not sure where it comes from or if it's related to the absence of reverse. It also appears to take longer (more revs) before it shifts from 1st to 2nd.

Any clues as to what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

I would guess that the reaction shell broke in the 4l60E transmission. This requires a tear down of the transmission to replace. If you have a local transmission shop, they can fix this and look for some of the other common problems the 4l60e has (valve body wear etc). tad

Thanks - you are confirming my worst fears. I was hoping for a lose wire or something though I really knew I could not be that lucky. Any idea what a shop may charge for this repair.

A rough guess would be $1300-$1500 with a 2 year warranty. Had a 700R4 done a while ago. Not sure if the electronics in the 4L60E would drive that up much or not. Regards, JR BTW this was in the North East US.

Would I be right in assuming that the best way to go here is a rebuild transmission with warranty? Any recomendations of a source in the Houston, Texas area?
