Whats the trick to removing the cover and getting it back on? I must be doing something wrong, this is a pain in the A@@ just to change the filter!

there are 2 big bolts (1 on each side) on the interior of vehicle that hold it on that attach to the firewall; up high near the dash

You must be talking about the air filter cover....???...because by this year, the air filter housing is out front on top of the radiator not under the doghouse.
I often apply a thin layer of grease to the area of the cover where the air filter fits....this allows you to slide the cover along the air filter as you engage the tabs at the rear of the cover.
