Lost oil pressure

Sep 16, 2006 3 Replies

I have a 1994 Chevy truck with the 4.3L V-6.

Normally, the oil pressure runs about 55 PSI according to the stock oil pressure gauge. I notice the oil pressure dropped to about 40-45 PSI the other day and has run steady at that until last night.

Last night I noticed that when I would come to a stop, the oil pressure would drop to about 10 PSI or even less, but would go back up to about 20 PSI after about 1 or 2 seconds.

There are two things that come to my mind, something blocking the oil pick up screen or a pump going out. Any more ideas?

Thanks for any advice....

I'll second the sending unit. Have had it happen on my own vehicle. If you have changed oil regularly I wouldn't suspect screen blocked on pick up. and oil pump failures are rare. You didn't say if you were getting any valve train noise when the gage reads low.

Thanks guys...

No noise that I have noticed. Haven't changed the oil recently either, but it is about time.

I found the sending unit at Pep Boys for $12. I think that I am going to buy one and try that as well as changing the oil while I am messing with the truck.
