OT: Taurus

97 Taurus, 3.0 12 valve. Anyone ever replaced the rear crank seal on this car? I just want to know if it is easier to pull the engine or the trans.

Did you just tell me its easier to pull the engine and trans together on this model? I asked cause my taurus was leaking. I lucked out though, it turns out the pan gasket was seaping, and the oil sender on the top rear of the engine was leaking pretty good. Oil was running down the rear of the engine making me think it was the rear seal until I checked it out closely. Ford makes an updated pan gasket for it... Got it done today. Considering I was laying on the floor of my garage doing the repairs, it was a piece of cake. Anybody need a new-in the package-motorcraft seal? :) cost me $11 I'll let it go for $5 :)

---------------------------------- Scrib, after careful reading of my original post and your answer I have come to the conclusion that you have replaced the rear crank seal on this model, and you think it is easier to pay someone else to do it. I originally thought it would be easier to pay someone else to do it too, until I was told 8.4 hours @ $78 for a grand total of $655. So back to the original question, is it easier to pull the engine or the trans? Not that it matters I guess since the car is now fixed. I look forward to your smart-ass responce as they are entertaining although not always helpful. :)

--------------------------- Jeez Scrib. What makes you so sure I could not do this myself? All you had to say was you should drop the sub-frame and its a major PITA without a lift. If I was in the habit of removing large bolts that hold large parts in the car while lying under the large part I would be dead a long time ago. LOL. The other guy's link didnt tell me shit. Thats pretty funny, trying to make people believe that a job according to you, I'm not even capable of - you could remove that seal, wash your hands, and walk to the parts room in

40 minutes. Anyway, thanks for having consern for my safety :) P.S. I did enjoy your smart-ass reply, It was very entertaining. LOL

If that seal ever starts leaking I'll change it and tell you all about how I did it. I sure would love to hear from Gary ( a guy who does trannys all day) on this issue. Whats up Gary? Think its imposible for anyone other than Scrib to change a rear main on a '97 Taurus? :)

Yep, all is well(no leaks). Just for the record I wasn't SCREAMING for help, and I have rarely broken anything (that wasn't rotten anyway) in my 20 years of fixing cars. I think it is VERY funny that you think that ONLY you (self proclained Transmission R&R Technician) and a handfull of highly trained R&R Technicians-ha-, think that I cant replace that seal. That title "Transmission R&R Technician" is simply hilarious. It kinda sounds like "Parts Changer Specialist". Also, if I was in need of money, I would change that seal that isn't even leaking for $5000
