96 Voyager - Power Steering noise

Aug 28, 2007 6 Replies
96 Grand Voyager / 3.3L - Pwr Steering pump (used pump from wreckers) & high pressure P.S. hose were recently changed; van ran good for a few weeks; now getting the occasional squeal / rough spot when turning wheel; seems more so when the van is cold /first started?? Fluid level is ok.

Any ideas? Bad pump (again)? pwr steering rack (hope not!)? Anybody have luck with the P.S. fluid addins/restorers..ie. Lucas?

Help appreciated... E Roth

Sounds more like a bad rack than a pump problem. If the power steering fluid looks dirty you might want to try flushing the sytem first.

The P.S. was flushed/ replaced with new "generic brand" fluid when the pump was changed. Is it worth flushing again; and then refilling with Chrysler ATF+4 tranny fluid (I read that when searching, is that really ok to use?) or Lucas P.S. fluid? Or just go ahead with the rack?

Thanks!

i would'nt jump to replacing rack yet have u takin the belt off to see if the pulley turns freely & even before that i would check tension of fan belt.if u put new belt on when u change pump they normaly seat in causing belt to losen up.

All good suggestions - will check belt etc. first

p.s. what's the verdict on using ATF+4 tranny fluid for power steering on a 96 Voyager - Yes / No ??

i would say ok to use but honestly i'm not really sure. might want to do some checking around on it. Good Luck & im hoping on the lose belt !!
