how to read codes on 1997 grand voyager

I have tried the on-off X3 method. The push both buttons and turn to run does do the codes, then code 1 2 ,3. I still cant get the diagnostic code to read. The van did seem to have transmission stuck in lower gear all the way home. Any help would be appreciated.

Without starting, key from off to run to off to run to off to run within 3-5 seconds (ending in run - car not running). Don't press any buttons. Watch the SES (service engine soon light) It flashes 2 digit codes with short pauses between the digits and longer pauses between the codes. If you miss them, wait until it finishes, then you can start again to verify your codes.

The Transmission is stuck in limp mode - there is a fault detected in the transmission or its control circuit. Most of the codes for transmission faults are not readable on the SES light through this method. You need to have a proper ODB codes reader take the codes. FYI - if it was an intermittent fault, the transmission controller is reset each time you turn of the car. If the fault is not detected on the next run, the transmission will shift normally. If it still will not shift, you need to take it and have the diagnostics done on it. When was the fluid and filter last changed? If this has been neglected, this can be not only the source of a problem, but can mean that it's too late and damage has been done. As you may know, these transmissions in these vans are a bit finiky for proper maintenance in order to get any life out of them.
