From Richard: Also check the antenna GROUND, where it grounds to the body. Usually the contact point corrodes.

My guess is that you have the combination MACH stereo system with Radio/CD/Cass. There is a picture of it at

If so, sounds like a very familiar problem of the EMI shield having broken solder joints. Once I fixed my blank display, my AM reception (when I use it) has been great...before I couldn't receive anything.
