Wrong Lubricant In Transmission

I got a letter from Ford today saying that the transmission in my '05 Limited had been "filled with a fluid formulation that, over time, may cause delayed/harsh reverse engagements". Ford offers to have the dealer install a bottle of additive to correct the formulation of the transmission fluid.



Somehow, I feel less than confident about this. Auto companies are usually the ones saying that additives are not effective and not recommended. Seems to me that Ford should replace the fluid, but guess I will have to take what I can get.

Anyway, the bottle of additive just changes the formulation to get a different (improved?) result. Hopefully they've tested it and aren't using your (and other) cars as their testbeds.

I haven't seen the documentation on this oone (heck, never heard about it before....). If the additive doesn't do the trick, Fords warranty costs would skyrocket (given the sheer numbers of Exs on the road). There are a few additives that Ford recognizes... in your case (and I'm guessing here) it would be a friction modifier that will extend the life of the clutch face material.

If I hear anything more, I'll try to remember to post it here.

Just think! You've not got a free lifetime warrenty on your tranny!

If they put the fluid in and much later on the tranny goes kaput, then you can take it back and point that out.
