I have a 83 ford ranger 2.2l diesel with unknown miles that lost coolant and overheated it died and will not start. When i turn it over it turns very smoothly like there is no compression. There is no water in the oil (but it lost coolant anyway).

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head....no compression.
